A CHINESE RED-GROUND DAMASK SILK MANCHU LADY'S ROBE

LATE 19TH CENTURY

The red silk subtly decorated with gourds and flowerheads, the edges and wide sleeve panels with crisp Cantonese embroidery depicting various birds, including peafowl, cockerels and cranes, contained within borders of bird medallions and floral designs against a blue ground, the yellow silk lining from c.1880, together with a copy of Chinese Silks and Sewing Tools by Jocelyn Chatterton, 128cm across, 138cm long. (2)

Provenance: from the collection of Dr Jocelyn Chatterton, purchased from Linda Wrigglesworth on 7th April 1997. A copy of the invoice is available. To be offered without reserve.
