THREE CHINESE SILK ROBES

LATE 19TH/20TH CENTURY

One a pale turquoise-ground informal lady's robe with floss silk embroidery, the sleeve panels with some Peking knot stitching and gold thread, another a salmon-coloured brocade informal robe decorated with prunus and bamboo, the third a bright blue brocade opera robe with silver and gold thread couching, with panels enclosing qilin to the front and back, together with a copy of Chinese Silks and Sewing Tools by Jocelyn Chatterton, 290cm across, 149cm long max. (4)

Provenance: from the collection of Dr Jocelyn Chatterton. The opera costume purchased from an antiques shop within the Shanghai Museum on 16th September 1997. The original invoice is available. To be offered without reserve.
