Fine Chinese Paintings & Works of Art

Tuesday 21st May 2019. Starts at 10:30am

One of the highlights of the Fine Chinese Paintings and Works of Art sale on 21st May is a scroll painting entitled The Grand View of Chao Mountain (lot 16) by Zhang Da Qian (1899-1983), one of China’s most prolific modern artists. In this painting, Da Qian used his famous splash ink and colour technique to create a spectacular spring landscape, a paradise which can be seen but never reached.

The sale will also include a rare Chinese underglaze red ‘dragon’ bowl from the first half of the 16th century (lot 135). The bowl was purchased from Bluett & Sons in 1944 by the famous collector R H R Palmer (1898-1970) and was exhibited at The Oriental Ceramic Society’s Ming Polychrome Exhibition in 1950 (no.133).

Other highlights include a pair of octagonal jade inset zitan jars and covers from the Qianlong period (lot 44), a Shang dynasty archaic bronze jue (lot 78), and a rare Qianlong period cinnabar lacquer treasure box and cover purchased from John Sparks Ltd in 1947.
