A Chinese blue and white dish mid 17th century

£1,000 - £1,200 £4,500

A Chinese blue and white dish mid 17th century, raised on a straight foot, boldly painted with a scaly kylin and plantain, the base with a four character mark which reads yu tang jiang qi, 35.6cm.

Provenance: Field Marshal Earl Kitchener of Khartoum (1850-1916), and thence by descent.

This rare mark implies the vessel is of a quality fine enough to be used in a grand mansion. It appears from the Jiajing period until the end of the Ming dynasty, and can be found on both porcelains from Jingdezhen and on Swatow wares from South China.
