A fine Chinese white jade carving of a horse Qianlong 1736-95, recumbent, with its head turned towards a small monkey which climbs upon its back and holds a flowering blossom spray, the horse carved with a finely defined bridle, mane and tail, and with the feet tucked neatly beneath the body, the stone of a smooth, translucent quality, a hardwood stand, 11cm. (2)

Provenance: a European private collection, purchased from Spink & Son in the 1950s.

The horse, ma, carrying a monkey, hou, represents the wish to be conferred with high rank. Such a piece would have been given to an aspiring official.
