A fine Chinese pale celadon jade carving of a recumbent water buffalo Qianlong 1736-95, with a kylin at its side which rests on cloud scrolls conjured from the buffalo's mouth, its head turned to dexter, with a contented expression and its horns curling to its back, the stone highlighting the kylin in white, a wood stand, 11.7cm. (2)

Provenance: a European private collection, purchased from Spink & Son in the 1950s.

The water buffalo and kylin depicted together are representative of the Gods of peace and prosperity, and symbolise rivers and oceans.
