A Khmer pottery jar

A Khmer pottery jar, in the form of an elephant with a round body supported on four short feet and with a small rider at the rim, circa 13th century, 22cm. Provenance: Lennox Money Antiques, London. Jars of this type were used for the preparation of a chewing quid known as betel and have been found most frequently in the districts of North East Thailand, which in the period of the Angkor Kingdom were part of Cambodia.
