An oak refectory table and pair of benches designed by Robert Lorimer, 1899 manufactured by Whytock and Reid for R.W.R Mackenzie of Earlshall, the rectangular top set above shaped apron with carved 'Lorimer' songbirds 244cm x 86.5cm wide Provenance R.W.R Mackenzie, Earlshall, Leuchars, Fife Christie's Earshall sale 14th September 1983 lot 376 Christie's 20th Century Decorative Arts 15th May 2002 lot 16 Private collection The Earlshall commission was highly important for the then untried architect. Lorimer was instructed to restore the place, to create a garden and also to provide some furniture to compliment the existing antique tapestries and furniture already collected by R.W. Mackenzie. These benches and the table are the first pieces of furniture that Lorimer designed for the client.
