A London delftware wet drug or syrup jar, mid 18th century, the globular body painted in blue with a cartouche inscribed 'OX: SIMP', surmounted with two birds flanking a basket of fruit, some retouching, a replacement spout, 17.5cm.
Oxymel Simplex was a basic syrup obtained by heating clarified honey and vinegar. It was used in the treatment of sore throats and as a basis for more elaborate remedies.
