A Delft drug jar c.1720
A Delft drug jar c.1720, of bottle shape with rounded body and a tall flared neck, painted in blue with two peacocks beside a basket of fruit atop a banner inscribed 'A Scabiosæ', a crack and chip to the neck, 25.5cm.
Aqua Scabiosa (a watery infusion made from scabious leaves) was used both as an anti-inflammatory and an anti-parasitic. However, it was potentially toxic and could cause kidney damage as well as inducing headaches and chills.
