An early delftware dry drug jar
An early delftware dry drug jar, painted with an angel with outspread wings holding a banner titled 'E: PECTORAL', above the initials 'I.G', last quarter 17th century, a chip to the footrim, 20.5cm.
As the title might suggest, an electuary pectoral was an ointment or poultice used for infections of the chest.
The initials 'I.G' are believed to relate to James Glover, a wealthy apothecary who made gifts to the Apothecaries' Society from the mid 17th century. He last appears in their records in 1702 and is discussed in the Pharmaceutical Journal of 5th February 1972.
