A creamware ship subject plate early 19th century

A creamware ship subject plate early 19th century, printed and coloured with a three masted clipper, titled 'Ship America Salem', and a salt-glazed stoneware octagonal plate, printed in black with a fox attacking a hen, the rim moulded with diaper panels, some rim faults, 25cm max. (2)

The America is described in 1922's Old Tim Ships of Salem as, "the largest, the fastest, the most fortunate and the most famous of all the privateers which at any time sailed out of Salem Harbour". During the 1812-15 war she captured 27 vessels, valued at over a million dollars.
