A Continental faïence wet drug jar
A Continental faïence wet drug jar, painted with the inscription 'S. De ABSYNTHIO' within a floral border including pink roses, blue painted mark to the base, 2nd half 18th century, some enamel wear and glaze chips, 21cm. Syrup of Wormwood was used to aid digestion and as an antiseptic, before its combination with anise and florence fennel made it more famous as the much maligned Green Fairy.
