Catalogue Note

This model of a resting leveret or hare does not appear to have any direct comparables. 'Dated English Delftware' by Lipski and Archer illustrates a number of models of other animals, including cats and dogs but 18th century models of hares are extremely rare in any ceramic material from either country of origin. Bonhams have recently offered one, described as English, as lot 94 on 19 November 2025 that sold for £10,000, and another on 23 June 2021, lot 63 and a salt glazed stoneware example on 29 September 2020, lot 110. Christie's offered a creamware leveret as part of the Price Glover Collection on 14th June 1988, lot 109 and Sotheby's sold another white saltglaze model of a hare as part of the Rous Lench Collection on 1st July 1986, lot 126.
