A rare pearlware Napoleonic jug c.1813

£80 - £120 £90

A rare pearlware Napoleonic jug c.1813, printed and hand-coloured with the 'Cossack Mode of Attack', the mounted Russian charging at two Frenchmen, the neck with a stylized foliate band in red and black, some wear, 15cm.

Provenance: a private collection from Dorset.

The French defeat in Russia at the end of 1812 demonstrated that Napoleon was not invincible nor the military genius that many supposed him to be. Cf. David Drakard, Printed English Pottery, pp.226-228 for a discussion of wares using these prints.
