A Berlin plate after the St Andrew Service, early 19th century, copying Meissen, with Gotzkowsky floral moulding to the well and rims, painted with the Imperial Russian eagle and with the Cross of the Order of St. Andrew the First-Called, painted with polychrome sprays of flowers, blue sceptre mark, 24.5cm.
The original St Andrew service was gifted to Empress Elizabeth of Russia by Augustus III of Poland in 1745. It was the largest order produced by the factory and one of the first official services to be produced in Europe. Supplements and replacements were produced at Meissen during the 19th century, and it is assumed that this was similarly produced, perhaps at a time when the Meissen factory was struggling.
