Racing interest: a rare Neale creamware oval tureen, each side painted with a portrait of a standing horse and titled 'High Flyer', '24' incised, c.1800, 17.5cm. The 'High Flyer' service was a special order made for Richard Tattersall, the well-known auctioneer and entrepreneur of horses for the nobility and Royalty, early in 1779 Tattersall bought the famous racer High Flyer from Lord Bolingbroke for 2,500. With High Flyer he began a stud farm at Damley, Middlesex and earned a large fortune. In 1780 he purchased the seat of New Barns, near Ely and renamed it Highflyer Hall, The Neale service was probably commissioned around the time of the purchase of this estate. Cf.
