A William IV painted bird's eye maple marriage table in the manner of Holland & Sons

A William IV painted bird's eye maple marriage table in the manner of Holland & Sons, the rectangular fixed top with rounded corners and decorated with fan motifs and centred with an oval panel with a greyhound with two stars, two crosses and a coronet, and titled 'CLINTON' surrounded by painted scenes of a young man and woman and with them embracing and dancing, with an outer band of scrolling leaves, with twin frieze drawers to either side, the base with parcel gilt decoration and a lappet carved stem, on four splay legs with scroll feet and castors, 71.7cm high, 90 x 137.2cm.

The centre of this table is painted with heraldic symbols which probably relate to Henry Pelham-Clinton, 5th Duke of Newcastle-under-Lyne, KG, PC (1811-1864). He married Lady Susan Hamilton (1814-1889) on the 27th November 1832 and this table might have been made to commemorate their wedding.
