‘The Age of Oak’ starts day 2 with items on offer from a number of collections from throughout the country. Highlights of the furniture include: the Godolphin Bed, a very fine and rare Elizabeth I oak tester bed, the huge ‘Mitton Hall’ oak refectory table and the very rare Lincolnshire carved oak chest. From another collection, there is a rare Medieval, 13th century ‘dug out’ chest, carved from a single tree trunk and a rare leather and iron bound domed ‘standard’ or chest, dating to the 15th century. The early works of art are led by a massive and rare Commonwealth period candlestick with provenance to the Syd Levethan Collection, sold by Christie's in 2010 and to Christopher Bangs Private Collection. This is followed by two further rarities – two pairs of German brass candlesnuffers, both made in Nuremberg in around 1600 but to noticeably different designs. A Scandinavian spouted peg jug from the 18th century is an unusual piece of folk art, the only comparable found being in Edward Pinto’s book ‘Treen and other Wooden Bygones’.

The sale concludes with a selection of over 50 lots of textiles the core of which is formed by selected rugs and carpets from the Collection of a lady. With examples from the Caucasus to China the Collection includes a 19th century Kazak rug with an indistinct date, a Ningxia Pillar rug dated to the 19th century or earlier, a Heriz carpet from Azerbaijan and a Talish runner also from the Caucasus. Outside this collection are two rare George III needlework sampler pin balls in the Quaker style, a fine sampler made from crocheted miniature clothing, an 18th century Spanish silk alter cloth and a pair of late 16th century silk and couched metal thread embroidered silk-velvet panels.
