An early Staunton pattern ivory chess set by J. Jaques, London, natural and stained red, the underside of the white king stamped 'J. JAQUES LONDON' in two parallel arcs, one rook and knight of each marked with a crown, c.1849-50, the king: 3.25in (8.5cm) h, the pawn: 1.5in (4cm) h together with a folding games box for chess and backgammon.
