An Edwardian novelty table lamp modelled as a lighthouse, the plated top with a fish weather vane and a sloping hinged roof to a light fitting behind six glazed panels, on a turned cannel body and a ebonised circular base, mounted a plaque, inscribed 'Let there be light. THE SHAFT IS CANNEL TAKEN FROM THE MAYPOLE COLLIERY, WIGAN, THE SCENE OF THE DISASTER, AUGUST 1908, TO MISS CARNEGIE FROM MAYOR, SAM WOOD, JULY 1909,' 24in 61cm) h. The Maypole Colliery, Abram, Lancashire, disaster on the 18th August 1908 killed seventy five men and boys. Despite heroic efforts to get to the trapped miners, rescuers were hindered by further explosions, fire and gases. As decision was finally made to flood the shafts, over 100 million gallons of water was used.
