λ A 19th century Indian ivory and bone polychrome painted figural part chess set, with wooden details, one side painted cream, the other side red, all with gilt highlights, the kings and queens modelled as elephants with howdahs carrying princes, the bishops as camels with drums and flags, the knights as horsemen, the rooks as elephants with rockets and the pawns as musicians, spearmen, flag holders and archers, Rajasthan c.1850-70, the king 14.5cm high, the pawn 7.8cm high.
