A 19th century brass counter box
A 19th century brass counter box, inset a medallion of a seated man playing cards, marked 'HOYLE', 1in (2.5cm) dia, containing four counters, all with a seated man playing cards and 'KEEP YOUR TEMPER', the reverse with a snake entwined rose, two with 'WISDOM AND PLEASURE'.
Edmond Hoyle (1672-1769), a tutor, writer and lawyer by trade, was best known as an expert on the rules and strategies behind card games and board games including chess and backgammon, memorializing the common phrase "According to Hoyle".
