A William IV mahogany longcase regulator timepiece by James McCabe, the fine quality brass eight day movement with five pillars and deadbeat escapement, with jewelled pallets and beat adjustment, with maintaining power and high count wheels and pinions, the wheels with six crossings and off set small weight, the mercury jar compensated pendulum suspended from a substantial bar mounted and spanning both plates, with a 13in circular silvered dial with Arabic numerals, with subsidiary seconds dial over an hour dial with Roman numerals, with blued steel hands, signed 'James McCabe Royal Exchange, LONDON' and numbered '2476', in a Gothic carved case, 194.2cm high.

James McCabe Snr founded his business in 1778 based in Fleet Street and then at 97 Cornhill, Royal Exchange. He produced fine clocks, chronometers and watches, he died in 1811 with his son James Jnr succeeding him. James Jnr was apprenticed to Reid and Auld of Edinburgh. In 1838 the Royal Exchange was destroyed by fire and the business moved to 32 Cornhill.
