A pair of 19th century equestrian wax dioramas

A pair of 19th century equestrian wax dioramas, depicting the horses 'Pan' and 'Pope', with riders, accompanied by dogs, in naturalistic landscapes, each inscribed 'DERBY 1808 PAN' and 'DERBY 1809 POPE', 16.5 x 21.5cm, each in a glazed mahogany moulded frame. (2)

Leggatt Brothers, purchased in 1932 for £15 and thence by descent.

Recently removed from Gavelacre House, Longparish, Hampshire.

Pan was a chestnut son of St. George and was bred by Sir H. Williamson in 1805. He won the 1808 Epsom Derby beating Vandyke and Chester. Pope was a bay son of Waxy Prunella by High Flier, bred by the Duke of Grafton in 1806. He won the 1809 Epsom Derby beating Wizard and Salvator.
