A Sufi Dervish coco de mer begging bowl or kashkul, with a bone handle and a beaded gilt brass chain, 19th century, 32cm wide.
Many Dervishes are mendicant ascetics who have taken a vow of poverty. However they cannot beg for their own good, they have to give the money to other poor people. Kashkuls carried the food donations Sufi Dervishes used for sustenance.
