with reeded decoration, the curved toprail above a bar back with scroll arms and a hinged cane seat, with a push button mechanism transforming into a four tread library steps with baize lining, on sabre legs, with an associated squab cushion

Catalogue Note
The design for the present lot was published by Morgan & Sanders, c.1810. See P. Agius, 'Ackermann's Regency Furniture & Interiors', pl.29, p.60. According to Ackermann, the chair was a 'truly novel and useful article....considered the best and handsomest article ever yet invented'. A chair of identical design by Morgan & Sanders is at Trinity College Dublin and is illustrated in Ralph Edwards and Percy Macquoid, The Dictionary of English Furniture, vol.11, p.291, fig.15.
