A 17TH CENTURY SAILOR'S TREEN OAK CHIP CARVED BOX
PROBABLY WELSH, DATED '1653'
all over relief carved with rondels of various designs, the hinged lid revealing a paper lined interior, the underside of the lid carved with a love heart, with initials and a date 'G M 1653', with an applied handwritten note 'This box made and carved with a penknife by Gideon Meggerson when a sailor on board of ship. Gill was related to my grandmother Lydia Richards, who gave me the box. G. M. left ...to....F. Pearce'
