Catalogue Note

This current work is after the bas-relief of the same title exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1857. It is based on Birkett Foster's illustrations of Wordsworth poems. 'The White Doe of Rylestone' was set in the time of Queen Elizabeth. Emily, the only surviving daughter of a family of Catholic rebels was comforted by the visits of a white doe that she had reared in happier times.
