A good William IV mahogany partners' library table attributed to Gillows of Lancaster
A good William IV mahogany partners' library table attributed to Gillows of Lancaster, the moulded edge rectangular top inset a later gilt tooled leather writing surface above three panelled frieze drawers to either side, on boldly carved baroque revival acanthus and scroll legs, each centred a cabochon with scroll toes and lobed bun feet to sunken brass castors, 78.8cm high, 194cm wide, 123cm deep.
Provenance: The Ceremony Room at Old County Hall, Trowbridge, Wiltshire.
There is a possibility that this table was brought to Old County Hall by John Thynne, 4th Marquess of Bath when he was appointed chairman on the newly founded Wiltshire County Council in the 1880s. For a similar library table in rosewood and with brass marquetry inlay see Susan Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London, 1730-1840, Volume II page 291, pl. 308.
A very similar table was sold by Bonhams, The Knightsbridge Sale, 30th September 2008, lot 262.
