A SMALL JAPANESE SIX-FOLD PAPER SCREEN, BYOBU
MEIJI PERIOD, 19TH CENTURY
Painted with two large cranes and other smaller birds in a luxuriant garden, a meandering river cascading behind them, with flowering prunus and pine trees on the gold background, together with a small collection of Japanese and Chinese works on paper, including woodblock prints of figures and an album of paintings, the screen 61cm x 139cm. (9)
Provenance: the collection of Collingwood 'Cherry' Ingram (1880-1981) and thence by descent. Cherry Ingram was a famous British ornithologist, plant collector and gardener who became renowned for his knowledge on Japanese cherry trees.
