A JAPANESE HANDSCROLL PAINTING, MAKIMONO

EDO PERIOD, 19TH CENTURY

In ink on paper, painted with nine shishi frolicking in a river landscape, the lion dogs depicted with curling manes, the end of the scroll inscribed Hogen Sukekiyo ga for Kano Kuninobu (1787-1840), approx. 28cm x 223cm.

Hogen is a Buddhist honorific title given to established painters. Kano Kuninobu received it in 1831. See the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, access. no.11.6527 for a painting of hawks on perches by Kano Kuninobu.
