TWO JAPANESE SQUARE LACQUER TRAYS
MEIJI OR LATER, 19TH OR 20TH CENTURY
Both embellished with a large tasselled treasure bag decorated with brocade patterns, prunus blossoms, scrolling tendrils and stylised dragons; beside it lie a variety of auspicious items including a fruiting branch of persimmon, stalks of rice, branches of red coral and a flaming tama (wish-granting jewel); all rendered in gold and silver nashiji, kirigane, and hiramaki-e on the lustrous black roiro ground, 3cm x 27.5cm x 27.5cm and 2.8cm x 26.1cm x 26.1cm respectively; in a fitted tomobako wood box inscribed Ine takara zukushi maki-e kasanebon (Rice stalks and treasures maki-e stacking trays), signed inside the lid Ogaki with a seal, possibly for Ogaki Shokun (1868-1937).
