A JAPANESE FOUR-CASE GOLD LACQUER INRO BY HIDETERU
EDO PERIOD, 18TH/19TH CENTURY

Finely decorated with an elegant ho-o bird or phoenix perched on a leafy branch of kiri (paulownia); all delicately rendered in gold takamaki-e, kanagai and kirikane on a roiro-mura-nashiji ground, the inside decorated in nashiji; signed Hideteru with kao; together with a mixed metal ojime decorated with fruit and mice; the inro 8cm.

Provenance: previously in the E A Wrangham collection, no.1933, originally purchased from Phillips, London, 1989.
