A GOOD JAPANESE SOMADA SCHOOL FOUR-CASE LACQUER INRO

EDO/MEIJI PERIOD

Decorated with seven horses galloping and grazing on hills, in aogai inlays on a roiro ground, the top, base and sides with complex diaper and stars designs, together with an orange goldstone ojime and an en suite hako netsuke with a similar pattern of horses in a field, unsigned but probably made in the Ryukyu Islands, 7.2cm max.

Provenance: deaccessioned from the Cleveland Museum of Art and sold to benefit the Acquisition Fund at Sotheby's New York, 3rd February 2000, lot #EJN. Then an English private collection, Surrey.
