A GOOD JAPANESE LACQUER WRITING BOX, SUZURIBAKO
EDO/MEIJI PERIOD
The lid finely decorated in gold and lacquer takamaki-e and tsuishu on a hiramaki-e ground, with inlays in mother of pearl and shell, depicting an elegant figure resting against a prunus tree and gazing pensively at a blossom, the beauty wearing long ornate robes with patterns of stylised cranes, clouds and flowers, the reverse of the lid with a large flower cart full of chrysanthemum and peonies, hanaguruma, the design continued onto the inner tray, with a white metal suiteki and an ink stone, a paper collection label underneath, unsigned, 22cm x 20cm.
