A JAPANESE BIZEN STONEWARE SAKE BOTTLE (TOKKURI)
MEIJI OR LATER, 19TH OR 20TH CENTURY
The tall pear-shaped bottle with a flattened side, the surface a mottled chocolate-brown and the misshapen side lightly scratched with stylised characters, a small impressed circular seal mark underneath, 29.5cm.
Provenance: from the collection of the late Gas Kimishima, wood-fire potter and specialist in the ancient kilns of Japan, purchased in Japan and thence by descent. Gas established his studio in England and built his own anagama kiln in Tring, Hertfordshire.
