A JAPANESE SETO OR SHIGARAKI SAKE BOTTLE (TOKKURI)
PROBABLY EDO, 18TH CENTURY
The cylindrical body raised on a short foot and with a slender neck, the sides with four indentations and decorated with tenmoku-style russet-coloured drips on the mottled chocolate-brown ground, 23cm.
Provenance: from the collection of the late Gas Kimishima, wood-fire potter and specialist in the ancient kilns of Japan, purchased in Japan and thence by descent. Gas established his studio in England and built his own anagama kiln in Tring, Hertfordshire.
