A LARGE AND IMPRESSIVE JAPANESE BRONZE OKIMONO OF A HAWK BY HIDEMITSU / SHUKO
MEIJI PERIOD, 19TH CENTURY
The raptor is naturalistically depicted, perched on a rocky outcrop emerging from silvered waves, its wings stretched as if to take flight, with some details rendered in gilt and shakudo, the underside of its tail feathers signed in a double seal for Kazumasa Ishida and Hidemitsu / Shuko Kansei (supervised by Hidemitsu / Shuko), 72cm overall. Kazumasa Ishida had a workshop in Tokyo and was a member of the Tokyo Chukin Kai (Tokyo Cast Metal Association).
