TWO JAPANESE BLUE AND WHTE BOWLS
EDO OR MEIJI, 19TH CENTURY
Both decorated in underglaze blue; the first possibly a spittoon painted to the well with a mountainous river landscape and a shaped panel enclosing flowers, the foot painted with lotus and scrolling tendrils; the other bowl with a carp to the centre and a celadon-coloured cavetto, the reverse with chidori in flight above waves, 16.9cm and 20.1cm respectively. (2)
Provenance: from the collection of the late Gas Kimishima, wood-fire potter and specialist in the ancient kilns of Japan, purchased in Japan and thence by descent. Gas established his studio in England and built his own anagama kiln in Tring, Hertfordshire.
