THREE JAPANESE BLUE AND WHITE BOWLS

EDO OR MEIJI PERIOD, 18TH OR 19TH CENTURY

All with underglaze blue decoration, the largest with a foliate rim and painted to the well with two minogame to one side and a bird in flight to the other, the reverse with further birds and waves; another bowl with kintsugi gold lacquer repair and painted with bats, waves and chidori; the third with a mountainous river landscape, butterflies, birds and brocade patterns, 27.5cm max. (3)

Provenance: from the collection of the late Gas Kimishima, wood-fire potter and specialist in the ancient kilns of Japan, purchased in Japan and thence by descent. Gas established his studio in England and built his own anagama kiln in Tring, Hertfordshire.
