A SMALL SHIGARAKI UZUKUMARU JAR
MEIJI PERIOD OR EARLIER, 19TH CENTURY
The small bulbous body with a short neck and an everted rim, decorated with a band of crosses incised on the shoulder, with a mottled grey glaze dripping from the top, the body underneath a reddish-brown colour, inscribed underneath, 14.5cm.
Provenance: from the collection of the late Gas Kimishima, wood-fire potter and specialist in the ancient kilns of Japan, purchased in Japan and thence by descent. Gas established his studio in England and built his own anagama kiln in Tring, Hertfordshire.
