TWO JAPANESE BIZEN BOTTLE VASES
EDO OR MEIJI, 19TH CENTURY
The first of tall cylindrical shape with a flared rim, one side with an indentation and with natural ash glaze; the other of bulbous shape with a tall neck, the surface a dark chocolate-brown, 28.8cm and 23.6cm respectively. (2)
Provenance: from the collection of the late Gas Kimishima, wood-fire potter and specialist in the ancient kilns of Japan, purchased in Japan and thence by descent. Gas established his studio in England and built his own anagama kiln in Tring, Hertfordshire.
