The Japanese sale on 27th July 2021 features about 255 lots and includes early ceramics, metalwork, namban art, woodblock prints and other artworks spanning the centuries.

The pottery model of a warrior (lot 216) is a good example of the type of Haniwa figures produced during the Kofun period (5th-6th century) which were used as tomb markers. From an English private collection, London, it was originally purchased at Christie’s London, 12th March 1985.

The sale will contain a good selection of early ceramics, including examples of Ko-Kutani, shoki Imari and Kakiemon, and a large selection of tsuba from a private European collection, including this impressive Edo Period shakudo example by Takase Yoshitoshi (lot 320). Another highlight of the sale is the articulated model of a hawk (lot 358), a good example of jizai okimono coming from the collection of the late Hubert René Joseph Georges Faure (1919-2020).

The sale will also feature a selection of netsuke and other sagemono from private collections, including the second part of a private English collection from a lady of title, and thence by descent. The first part of the collection was sold in the Japanese Works of Art sale on 1st July 2020; this new offering concentrates on wooden examples, including a selection of zoomorphic pieces by Masanao of Yamada (Ise Province).  Lot 433 is another example of high-quality Meiji period pieces and is a fine example of saya sheath inro.
