A LARGE AND IMPRESSIVE PAIR OF JAPANESE ARITA BLUE AND WHITE VASES AND COVERS
EDO PERIOD, C.1700
The large octagonal baluster bodies decorated in underglaze blue with large Hō-ō birds in flight and perched amongst vegetation, in a luxuriant garden with large camellia and rockwork, framed by borders of triangular lappets, scrolling tendrils, auspicious objects and karakusa scrolls to the necks; the covers with further birds amongst flowers, 71cm and 73cm. (4).
Provenance: from the collection of Baron & Baroness Michiels Van Kessenich of Kasteel Reymersbeek, The Netherlands, and thence by descent.
