A JAPANESE SETO FIGURE OF DAIKOKU
EDO PERIOD, DATED SEPTEMBER 1843
The God of Good Fortune typically depicted standing on hay bales holding his mallet, with several tama (precious jewels) decorating the surface, the back incised with a long inscription reading as Tenpō Jūshinnen, Mizunoto-U Kugatsu Kichijitsu (on an auspicious day in September, Year 14 of the Tenpō Era), Seto-mura (Seto Village), Shōdō Tōsen saku (Made by Shōdō Tōsen), 31.5cm.
