A LARGE JAPANESE DISH BY KONDŌ YUTAKA (1932-83)
SHŌWA ERA, 20TH CENTURY
The monochrome dish decorated in a technique similar to the Chinese Cizhou or Korean Buncheong wares, with sprays of white flowers on a black ground, the reverse signed with a single character for Yutaka, with a tomobako (wood box) inscribed Funka hachi (deep dish with black and white stamped design), and signed and sealed Yutaka, 39cm. Kondō Yutaka (1932–1983) was a Kyoto-born artist renowned for mastering the Chinese Cizhou technique. During his career, he received many prizes including the prestigious 1967 JCS Award. He was honoured with a 1985 retrospective at the Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art, and his work is included in major collections, including the MET Museum in New York, the Victoria & Albert Museum, and the Kikuchi Kanjitsu Memorial Tomo Museum in Tokyo.
