A PAIR OF LARGE AND IMPRESSIVE JAPANESE BRONZE VASES BY HASEGAWA YOSHIHISA (1928–2002)
SHŌWA ERA, 20TH CENTURY
Each of tall cylindrical form with a short rim, both vases with a rich mottled patina; the surfaces with warm red, orange and chocolate-brown swirls; each with an incised signature for Yoshihisa to the base and one with a minute seal mark; one with a tomobako (wood box), the front signed Yoshihisa, inscribed Akebono (Dawn, possibly the name of the vase referring to its warm patina), and with a red seal mark reading as Kokka Shitei Dentō Kōgeihin (Nationally Designated Traditional Craft Product); the reverse with a dedication noting that the vase is a gift in celebration of an inauguration or appointment to a high office, offered by Kiyono Gentaro, President of Yamagata National (Panasonic) and dated March 1978 (Shōwa 53); both 37cm.
