A LARGE AND IMPRESSIVE JAPANESE TWO-FOLD SCREEN
MEIJI ERA, 19TH CENTURY
The panels elaborately carved in high relief and decorated with Momotaro (the 'Peach Boy') on his quest to Onigashima (The 'Demon Island'), one side with the boy depicted wrestling a large red oni, his acolytes the dog, the monkey and the pheasant chasing other demons around him, the monkey with a movable sword attached to its waist; all framed by borders of chrysanthemum and iris, the lower halves decorated with large carp amongst crashing waves; all lacquered in red, black, yellow, gold and silver and inlaid with stone and glass cabochons; the reverse carved with a dense design of scrolling clouds, 197cm x 83cm.
