TWO SCROLL PAINTINGS OF LANDSCAPES
19TH/20TH CENTURY

The first a Japanese kakejiku (hanging scroll painting) with a lone figure on a mountainous path, signed Koun chu and sealed Chu in and Koun, possibly for Yamada Koun (1878-1956), inscribed with the poem Keizan tanki, kinoe-inu shujitsu Seigen Sodo nite saku (Exploring the Wonders of Streams and Mountains, painted by Koun Chu, a day in autumn in the year of the wood dog -possibly 1934- at the Seigen Sodo, a thatched studio in the field), 129cm x 33.5cm; the other depicting figures on a boat in a landscape, ink and colour on paper, with title slip Shuzan zu (Painting of an Autumnal Mountain); signed Shizai ding-mao zhongxia Man Jing ti /Jizai Hinoto-u chuka Mansei dai (Painted and inscribed by Man Jing / Mansei) and dated the mid-summer of the Fire Hare (probably 1807), with three seals possibly reading as Man Jing/Mansei, Jiaqing yulan zhi bao (A Treasure viewed by the Jiaqing Emperor) and Shenpin (A sublime work), 86cm x 35cm.
